Professor Vjekoslav Gerc, MD, PhD, was born in Sarajevo in 1941. In 1960. completed secondary studies (Classica Gymnasium in Sarajevo), from 1960-1966. graduated from University of Sarajevo, School of Medicine in 1966, and awarded the MD degree. In 1967. Beginning of the employment at The Clinic for Heart Diseases, Sarajevo.Teaching Hospital. From 1969-1973. fished specialization in internal medicine at the Department of Cardiology of the University Hospital in Sarajevo; 1981. Awarded the degree Master of Science by the University of Sarajevo. M.Sc. thesis: Methyldopa and Clonidine Sympathetic Inhibitors in Comparison with Propranolol and Pindolol Beta Blockers in the treatment of Hypertension. 1984. Awarded the PhD degree by the University of Sarajevo. PhD thesis: The Choice of Antihypertensive Drugs in Relation to Lipids: comparative study of the influence of beta blockers and diuretics on lipid levels. 1976. Appointed an assistant in internal medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Sarajevo. 1989. Appointed an associate professor at the School of Medicine, University of Sarajevo. 2002. Appointed a professor at the School of Medicine, University of Sarajevo. As the principal author and co-author, Dr. Gerc published more than 60 original and review articles in the following journals: Blood Pressure Monitoring; Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences; Liječnički Vjesnik; Hypertension; Journal of Hypertension; Cardiology; Medical Journal; Medical Archives; Medical Review; Praxis; Schweizerische Medizinische Wochenschrift. European Heart Journal. Dr. Gerc is a member of the board of Association of Cardiologists of Bosnia and Herzegovina.. He is also a member of Academy of Medical Sciences of B&H, European Society of Hypertension, European Society of Cardiology, and the Medical Section of the Academy of Science and Art of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is also a member of the boards of the journals Medical Archives. Dr. Gerc was the first president of the Working Group for Hypertension of Bosnia and Herzegovina and held the post from 1999 to 2017. He participated in the drafting of the 2013 European Hypertension Guidelines. He participated in the founding of Academy of Medical Sciences of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009, together with other colleagues and prof. dr. Izet Mašić, who was the principal founder and spiritus movens of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 2016 he retired.
